- Bunk beds free up space in a bedroom like no other piece of furniture.
- Despite safety concerns, a high quality bunk bed is very well constructed and not at all dangerous to children. When buying a new bunk bed take special care to inspect the construction and quality of the ladder and the side rails.
- Traditional bunk beds were simply 2 beds stacked one above the other, but things have changed. It is now possible to buy twin over full (where larger beds are used), children’s bunks (where the top bunk is lower to the ground) and loft bunks (where there is only one bed with a play/work/storage area below the bed.
- Bunk beds are available in a variety of finishes and materials to suit both your décor and your budget.
- Easy to move. For people who move around a lot, a bunk bed can easily be assembled and disassembled, saving on transport costs and making the bed easy to maneuver around tight areas in the home.
- Flat packed. Rather than having to pay expensive delivery charges, a bunk bed is usually a flat pack item designed for home assembly, and it should neatly fit in the back of most family cars.
- Versatile. Use bunk beds as a traditional top/bottom bed arrangement or (in most cases) split them into 2 standard single beds.
- Dual purpose rooms. If you only have the occasional visitor, why not use a bunk bed in your spare room, freeing up space for a desk or storage?
- Easily resalable. Unlike a divan bed (which you’re usually stuck with for life) a bunk bed has a great resale value because there’s very little that can go wrong with them, and there isn’t a hygiene issue.
- Because they’re fun. Kids love bunk beds. We all had them as children, and for the foreseeable future, our children are going to want them too.
10 reasons to buy a bunk bed
The Joseph Polo wooden bunk bed
Children love the adventure of sleeping (and playing) on bunk beds. The Polo wooden bunk bed from Joseph is a beautifully simple bed finished in a rich white lacquer.
Currently, the Polo is available at Bedstar for a very reasonable £375.
The Polo is solidly built to provide exceptional support and comfort and a sturdy guard rail around the edge of the top bunk will ensure your child can’t fall out of bed during the night.
This bunk bed set can be used either as a traditional top/bottom bunk bed arrangement, or split into 2 full size single beds. A sturdy ladder is included with the package and is also finished in hard-wearing white lacquer.
Dimensions of the Joseph Polo are
- Height: 169cm (this includes the width of the ladder)
- Length: 201cm
- Width: 100cm
Mattress Option
2 mattresses are needed for the Polo, and are not included as standard with the bed. The mattresses required are 3FT singles, measuring 90 x 190cm each.
Joseph manufactures the Solo mattress, which compliments this bed perfectly. The Solo is a basic open coil sprung mattress with a stitchbond cover, and is also suitable for occasional use by an adult.
The Solo is available at Bedstar for £100 per mattress.
A wooden bunk bed for girls
Just because a bunk bed is made of wood doesn’t mean you can’t add a splash of colour.
The Sweet Dreams Kipling is a beautiful bed, finished in white and pink lacquer and made from solid rubber wood. This bed is excellent value for money at just £225.
The Kipling can easily be broken down into 2 single beds, making it very versatile when sleeping arrangements need to change in a hurry, and the solid frame ensures the bed is very strong.
Note that this bed is available as a flat pack item and will need to be home assembled. All bolts and fixings are included in the pack, and assembly shouldn’t take longer than 30 minutes.
There are no mattresses included with the Kipling, and as with all Bedstar’s wooden bunk beds, we recommend using the Solo mattress from Joseph. However, any standard 3FT single mattress that can be used on a slatted wooden base will fit the Kipling’s frame.
Dimensions of the bed (assembled) are as follows:
- Width – 158cm (this includes the ladder which can be mounted either on the left or the right hand side of the bed frame)
- Length – 200cm
- Height – 165cm (when used as a bunk bed set)
Various add-on options are available to make the Kipling even more versatile:
- The captain’s bedframe option, including storage drawers that are fitted under the bed.
- A Kipling 2-door wardrobe
- A Kipling bedside cabinet
- A Kipling 5-drawer chest
5 daft bunk bed questions/comments from the Internet
Researching topics for articles on this website can be tricky at the best of times. Other than covering the facts, there are only so many things you can write about bunk beds.
Yes they’re versatile and practical, and yes, they are the most popular type of children’s bed in Britain, but once you’ve discussed each bed’s features and benefits, what’s left to write?
Lots actually. I love tracking down interesting/amusing things people have written about bunk beds online. Today I have 5 great snippets taken from Yahoo’s answers website, always a source of odd questions.

A bedroom in a box
We all want the best for our children, but sometimes there just isn’t enough space in a child’s bedroom for them to have all the furniture they would like. However, bed manufacturers know that people with limited living space still want a full furniture set, and they’re coming up with innovative ideas to help homeowners out.
A great example of this type of bed is the Star Collection Bedsitter, arguably the best children’s bed available in the UK for use in tight spaces. I like to think of the Bedsitter as a bedroom in a box, because it really does contain everything your child’s bedroom needs (and it comes in a box!)
At £515 it isn’t the cheapest bunk bed in our range, but you really do get value for money with all these features:
- A single bunk bed
- Made from antique pine
- Finished in a low gloss, hard-wearing lacquer
- Includes a short wardrobe
- And a desk
With this bed in place, your child won’t need to use the dining room table or the floor to finish their homework, and there is ample space in the wardrobe for all their clothing. A sturdy wooden ladder is also included with the Bedsitter to allow your child safe and easy access to their bed.
The Bedsitter is build to incorporate a standard 3FT mattress (not included with the bed, but available as an add-on from Bedstar). The recommended mattress for the Bedsitter is a Joseph Solo, currently available at just £75 extra.
Bedstar offers free delivery on this flat-packed item within mainland UK, and I can tell you from first-hand experience that the easy-to-follow instructions included with this wooden bunk bed make it very easy for 2 people to assemble.
Pine bunk beds
If wooden bunk beds are the most popular type of children’s bed, pine bunk beds are without doubt the most popular of all wooden bunks. Priced at just £240, the Nickelby bunk bed is manufactured from solid pine and coated with a smooth clear lacquer.
The Nickelby is professionally finished, using modern solid construction techniques. The headboards and footboards are solid panels, and the bunk bed ladder can be placed on either the left or right hand side of the bed.
Two single mattresses (90 x 190cm) will be needed for the Nickelby, and we recommend the Joseph Solo mattress as a durable, hard-wearing but very comfortable open coil spring mattress. The Solo is suitable for babies and children as well as for occasional use by adults.

A cheap wooden bunk bed
Recently my wife sent me shopping for a cheap wooden bunk bed to put in our guest room when we have my nieces over to stay. Priced at just £205 the Lincoln bunk bed was about the cheapest bed set I could find online.
Just because it is cheap doesn’t mean that quality has been sacrificed on this bed. This is a high quality bunk bed, and good woods have been used.
The Lincoln is a standard 3FT single bed set manufactured from solid pine. With spindled headboards and footboards it fits in nicely with a rustic or country styled room.
As with any good quality bunk bed, the manufacturers let you choose your own mattress combination. At Bedstar our best selling mattress for the Lincoln is a SOLO 3FT single mattress made by Joseph. This is an open coil sprung mattress and fits this bed perfectly.

- Assembly: This product is a flat pack item and needs to be assembled at home
